I wrote my first “real” short story when I was about 7 or 8 years old. It was about some kids who hunted for treasure on an island. Maybe not the most original topic ever, but I made up for it with a construction paper cover, illustrations and even a thrilling blurb on the back cover about what to expect inside! My mom said then I was destined to be a writer and well, I guess it stuck.
Since my early foray into exciting short adventure stories, I’ve written for a host of publications that include Pregnancy, Tuscaloosa, Fitness Plus, Devo’Zine, Tannehill Trader and more. Feature stories on interesting people are typically my game, but I’ve also written technical documentation, ad copy, brochure copy and web content. I’ve even penned a few Dylan Thomas-worthy poems – Dylan Thomas the Thoroughbred racehorse, that is.
I’m working on my first novel right now, and my mom says it’s “good,” so I hope she’s right. Despite my early attempts at writing fiction and my lifelong penchant for reading great fiction, really writing good fiction is tuff. The writing is real work. There are so many nuances of the act that you just don’t expect until you’re headlong into a scene. It’s fun though! Incredibly so. One day I hope novel-writing is my bread and butter.
